Descendants of John Eckerson

Generation No. 1
1. JOHN4 ECKERSON (THOMAS3, JAN2 THOMASZEN, THOMAS1 HUGESSON) was born August 27, 1701 in BP.New York Dutch Reformed Dutch Church, and died in not known. He married MARYTIE VEDDER March 26, 1747, daughter of JOHANNES VEDDER and MARIA FORT. She was born June 18, 1724 in Schenectady, NY, and died in not known.
Notes for JOHN ECKERSON: John or Jan Eckerson was married 4 times 1.Maria Slingerland C-1724. 2.Margrietje Viele on June 3, 1733. 3.Maria Catharina Borst on June 17,1735. 4.Maritie Vedder on March 26, 1748. John Eckerson was a miller and blacksmith. He owned lands which the Stone Fort of Schoharie, NY now stands. John Eckerson name is inscribed up at the top level of stones of the Stone Fort, among other contemporaries of his time. Even though he had many children by his four wives, many of them did not live past childhood, which is why you will see the same name over and over again posted in the baptismal records. There is mention of John Eckerson during the Revolutionary War, so we suspect he lived at least until 1776-1780. "The Eckersons of the Schoharie Valley" pages 240-243 Annetje's Father, Major Johanes Eckerson, ran the Eckerson Grist Mill, the first built in Weisendorf(Middleburgh) by his Uncle Teunis, and later built his own mill at Foxdorf in 1760 which "stood between the old farm house and the creek and was partially burned in the same raid of 1780 which destroyed his uncle's mill". After the Revolution had ended Col. Peter Vroman bought the mill at Foxdorf from John Eckerson. These data came from several Schoharie Sources - Arthur H. Van Voris, Editor of the Schoharie County Historical Review, etc. on the nest Page- Major Johannes Eckerson stood within the Palisades of the fort that morning and saw that great mill he had inherited go up in smoke, After the war Major Eckerson rebuilt the mill...but it was again destroyed by a tumultuous spring ice jam...no other mill was ever built on that site. There is a different version of the above story Tuenis son Major Thomas Eckerson who watched the mill burn from the Middle Fort. Page 97 with chapter titles "The Eckerson Grist Mill"

Notes for THOMAS ECKERSON: On page 29 of the "Eckerson Family" a genealogy compiled by Ray Eckerson about 1939 there is Thomas Eckerson's descendant sheet. At the bottom of this page in quotes; Thomas Eckerson was a son of John Eckerson, a nephew of Thomas Eckerson of Middleburgh, the major under Col. Peter Vrooman of the 15th Reg. He settled after the revolution upon the farm now occupied by Alex Hayes. He had seven children......... He held a commission as Major after the war and was a very energetic man. He early applied himself with the Colonial cause and was the miller of the present Stevens Mill, near the lower Fort during the Revolution" (Roscoes History) "The name Ecker, Eckerson and Aker are often confounded as one but it is a mistake, while the first two are the latter is an entirely different Family"(Roscoes History).

Per Wm. Barker's "Early Families of Schoharie, New York", 1985:( ed. note: Barker took his information from written genealogies located in Schoharie) (Called Cornelius Ecker on 1781 bp rec., presume Ekkerson intended) - bp 2/12/1758 (son of John, as noted on 1781 mar. rec.); m. SRL 1/16/1781 Catherine Hilsinger, presumably theCatherine (b. 1758) dau of Michael Hilsinger. This was probably the Cornelius Ekkerson whose will, dated 6/25/1793 (probated 3/3/1797), mentions brothers John (with son Teunis), Thomas, and James (with son John). Probably this was the Private Cornelis Ekkerson who served during the Revolution in Capt. Stubrach's Col, 15th NY militia (Hagan/66).
